Stabilization of movement at the vascular access device (VAD) exit site is recognized as an important intervention in preventing complications and increasing catheter dwell time. The risk for unintentional catheter dislodgement is reduced, and when pistoning movement of the catheter at the site is minimized, the risk for phlebitis, infection, and catheter migration may also be reduced. While many HCPs may equate stabilization with application of a dressing and tape, the Infusion Nurses Society recommends use of an “engineered,” meaning specially designed, stabilization device or system. In this presentation, stabilization methods, new and novel devices, and current supporting evidence are explored.

Lisa Gorski has worked for over 30 years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for Wheaton Franciscan Home Health & Hospice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is the author of over 50 journal articles on home care and infusion therapy related topics. Lisa served as a committee member for the American Nurses Association’ Home Health Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice (2014). She is past- president of the INS, and was chair of the 2011 and 2016 INS Standards of Practice. In 2006, she was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing. Lisa was named the 2003 CRNI of the Year by INS and the 2011 CNS of the Year by the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. She has spoken nationally and internationally on standards development, home health care and home infusion therapy.
